Chapter Sixteen
Rick did a quick head check around the side of the house. He wasn’t sure who was visiting so late at night, but getting his head blown off was something he was trying to avoid. He saw a car sitting in the driveway that wasn’t supposed to be there, but no one was inside. Edward had already said he hadn’t invited any more people to the party, and neither had Rick.
So who in the hell ’s car sat in the driveway? One of the human drunks Edward had told him about? It didn’t seem likely in Rick’s opinion, but these days he wouldn’t be surprised if the president himself walked up the driveway. Rick had gone into overparanoid mode since all of this had started, and he found that most of the time, it saved his ass.
“I’m unarmed.” Rick glanced around, trying to get a fix on the location of the disembodied voice. Whoever it was, they were good. Rick couldn’t even catch a scent. But it didn’t set well with him that someone could sneak up on them like this. It was his job to keep everyone safe and the I can slip past you fucker had thoroughly pissed Rick off. “Who are you?”
Nate came to the screen door, but Rick held his hand up, keeping his enforcer back. One look to Nate and Rick knew the man was already gathering everyone inside for a speedy exit. This was exactly why Edward and Isabelle shouldn’t have gone out drinking. His sister was toasted and wouldn’t sober up for at least another hour.
It was also really strange seeing her tipsy. He had never seen Isabelle act this way and wondered if it was because of Edward, or if she had a whole other life he hadn’t been aware of. As soon as she sobered, Rick and Isabelle were going to have a little talk.
“ My name is Lieutenant Commander Nicholas Henderson. I need to talk to Enrique Marcelo.”
Rick glanced around, but he still couldn’t get a fix on the man. It was pissing him off. “So talk.”
“I’d rather not make a public speech. Are you Enrique?”
“Show yourself.” Rick was getting really impatient with this man. He could see Dorian out of the corner of his eye, standing just on the side of the doorway, gun in hand. His mate may have been green when they first started out, but Dorian had no qualms about handling a gun. The man had a spine of steel. Rick held his hand up, telling Dorian to stay back. His mate nodded.
“Not all are what they appear to be.” The stranger’s voice was closer, but Rick recognized it now that the man had somewhat identified himself. “We don’t have much time, Enrique…they’re coming for you.”
Rick glanced at Edward, who was standing beside him, scanning the area, and then he looked back out at the darkness. He walked toward the steps that would take him to the backyard when Edward grabbed his arm.
“I don’t like this.
